Several years ago, I remember being in the same position. Is an MBA a necessity and if so, would the opportunity cost and commitment be worth it? I read this Techcrunch post from Vivek Wadhwa this morning and it got me thinking again. I was an engineer and I decided to get an MBA a few years into my career to move to management. I was already doing some project management and it seemed like the logical next step. In my case I still strongly believe that the MBA would have helped me move up the corporate ladder faster. But, what if you are an entrepreneur, is an MBA really something you should be pursuing? I think the answer is still yes, only if you do not have an engineering degree.
I have to agree with Guy Kawasaki ,an engineering degree and perhaps a minor in entrepreneurship or engineering management would probably result in a much more versatile skill set required for getting a startup going. A few years down the road an MBA makes sense when you make those big bucks, do the big analyses and manage a few employees. On the other hand, if you have a business degree in any field, go get your MBA now.
