About Raj Murthy

Raj MurthyHi I am Raj Murthy and I am an Associate Professor of Marketing and Digital Business at the Saunders College of Business. I hold a Ph.D. in Business Administration (Specialization – Marketing), a Masters in Business Administration (Management of Information Systems) and a Bachelors in Engineering. I remain an active business consultant and my research is tied strongly to my experience and teaching interests in the domain of analytics, data and branding. In the past few years my primary area of interest is in the design and execution of data driven consumer engagement strategies. I am currently working on projects employing predictive analytics and machine learning using user generated data. My research has been featured in the Harvard Business Review (2 cases) and MIT’s Sloan Management Review as well as published in top academic journals such as the Journal of Management, Journal of Marketing Management and Business Horizons. Prior to the academic world, I have worked and consulted with various companies over the last ten years including Sprint, The World Bank, Dun & Bradstreet, Nuance Communications and Cognizant Technology Solutions among others.

2016 was a big year for me. I was the recipient of the Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching for AY2015-16, which represents the University’s highest recognition of exemplary teaching. A few weeks later I found out that I was the finalist for Best Lecture Award from the Innovative Learning Institute in 2016. In late 2015, I was awarded the Exemplary Performance in Teaching and Student Impact Award from the Saunders College of Business. It was also a great publishing year with four of my articles appearing across various outlets in 2015. Back to why 2016 is a great year; I am going away on a sabbatical from May 2016 to Feb 2017. I am planing to get some of my SAS and RapidMiner certifications during this time to help me in developing curriculum for a Master in Business Analytics program.

Working at an institution like RIT while maintaining my consulting work has been quite a ride. Being at RIT also allows me to do a number of things like developing and implementing paradigm shifting courses. For e.g. I received the Provost Learning and Innovation Grant in 2012 for the development of a new course on Social Media. This course was offered as the first course in social media marketing at RIT under the title – Effective Social Media for Marketing Communication. Prior to that in 2011, I pioneered a Search Engine Marketing and Analytics class as part of RIT’s Digital Business curriculum. The fun part is that I continue to teach both classes and in most of my classes we help local businesses (and national) through pro-bono consulting projects. My students are the best part of my academic employment, meetings are probably the worst part.
